We were delighted to welcome these three talented young musicians (click to go to their website) to the Club on 27 October 2017 and then on 1st March 2019. They are accomplished instrumentalists and fine singers. Tom on guitar provides a complex rhythmic backing and, through electronic wizardry, an intermittent bass line, plus backing vocals. He also occasionally plays a single plucked melody line. Will plays mandola, both strummed and plucked, and occasional four-string banjo, plus percussion - he also sings lead on many songs with an excellent voice.. Robin plays mainly mandolin, swapping to four-string banjo from time to time - and takes lead vocals at times. The combination of the fretted instruments is used subtly to switch dynamics and maintain interest. In a similar way, vocals could be solo, three in unison or harmony.
The songs are, as others have said, 'rooted in the folk tradition' thus genuine traditional tunes and songs are interwoven with their own well-crafted lyrics set either to trad tunes or their own trad-sounding tunes. Their performance is polished but never lifeless; they take it in turns to introduce the numbers in a planned but informal manner, with asides, anecdotes and self-deprecating remarks. It is at times thrilling, moving and rousing and was enthusiastically received by a packed Club room back in October 2017.
In the intervening 18 months they have won a 'best newcomer award', earned plaudits for their club and festival appearances and have their first album out, 'Hide and Hare!'. We highly recommend a listen!
