A great night with Marilyn - a 'one off', out-of-retirement gig especially for us! What a voice and a great personality - she really entertained us with a broad range of numbers. These varied from the out-and-out blues (Ida Cox's 'Wild Women Don't Get the Blues' and Bessie Smith's 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out'), something from her jazz repertoire ('Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby'), the gospel ('Bringing in the Sheaves') to the more melodic and thoughtful - songs by Stan Rogers including the terrific 'Lock Keeper' and Jerry Spurlock's lovely 'Man in the Moon'.
A packed audience quickly warmed to Marilyn and she established a great rapport with them, having them singing and clapping along with her when appropriate - the evening finished with some improvised blues with other musicians in the house.
Will this really be Marilyn's last folk club appearance? If so, we were privileged to be there.
